What are silverfish?

It probably comes as no surprise that, as adults, these insects are silver and have tapered bodies and scales like fish. Young silverfish are white and, of course, smaller. Silverfish have soft, flat, oval-shaped bodies with antennae and no wings. They measure about 1/2″ to 1″ long.

Are silverfish harmful?

In a word, no. They don’t bite or spread disease. That said, we’re sure you don’t want silverfish in the house. Not only do they have long antennae and a habit of darting out from behind a curtain or the pages of a book, but these bugs tend to feast on many of the items in your home. Here’s a sample of what’s on the menu for this creepy crawler:

  • Glue
  • Flour
  • Paper
  • Grains
  • Fabrics
  • Veggies
  • Starches
  • Dead bugs

So, while the people and pets aren’t in danger with silverfish in the house, your belongings and the contents of your pantry aren’t safe.

Why are there silverfish in my home?

Like other pests, silverfish are opportunistic. They’re looking for food, water and shelter, and most houses have these in abundance. The difference between your home and your neighbors’ is that they were able to get inside yours more quickly and easily. Here are some ways to keep these and other unwanted visitors away:

  • Reduce excess moisture
  • Place fine mesh over vents
  • Repair torn or holey screens
  • Avoid leaving pet food outside
  • Replace worn or damaged weatherstripping
  • Place opened food in sealed containers or the fridge
  • Seal cracks, gaps, and holes around your home’s exterior

These tips will make your home less appealing to silverfish—and more difficult to breach. If you do see signs of a silverfish infestation, call your local pest control professionals right away.
